The biggest sports news of 2021 is that Lionel Messi has departed Barcelona and made Paris his new home. By inking a contract with PSG, he secured a yearly salary of $41 million, a part of which will come in the form of cryptocurrencies.
According to his new club, the Argentine GOAT will receive a portion of his wages in $PSG Fan Tokens.
The cryptocurrency Lionel Messi will receive from PSG is a fan token called $PSG Token. Created in January 2020 with the help of cryptocurrency platform Socios, the token was meant to help the Parisian club extend its fan community.
More than a year and a half after the inception of PSG’s crypto token, its price has skyrocketed. Obviously, the reason is Lionel Messi.
The trading of $PSG Token went over $1.2bn last week, prompting PSG’s President Nasser Al-Khelaifi to share his joy with the world, saying that everyone will be shocked by the profits generated by Messi’s signing.
The cryptocurrency craze has swept over the world of sports, with NFL superstars leading the way. Next on the list is soccer, where big clubs have started developing their own tokens, which the fans can buy, sell, or store. Same as other cryptocurrencies, fan tokens can also be traded on major crypto exchanges.
Among the soccer clubs that have already gotten onto the fan token bandwagon are Manchester City, AC Milan, Juventus, and Barcelona.
The reigning Premier League champions, Manchester City, is one of the leaders in the soccer world, not only when it comes to the game, but also when it comes to the crypto industry. The club launched its fan token in partnership with Chillz, a crypto development company with whom they will share the profits.
The $CITY token can be acquired through several methods, including the rewards app Socios. Alternatively, fans can purchase the token on exchange platforms, which would grant them access to all sorts of perks, including the right to vote in club’s polls, claim special promos, and so on.
Apart from developing its own fan token, Manchester City has also ventured in other crypto-related activities. For example, the club made a partnership deal with a company Animoca, who’s job is to create blockchain games aimed at the fans of the Sky Blues.
